چکیده

Han J, Xu J, Long YS, Epstein PN, Liu YQ. Rat maternal diabetes impairs pancreatic -cell function in the offspring. Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 293: E228–E236, 2007. First published March 27, 2007; doi:10.1152/ajpendo.00479.2006.—It has been shown that maternal diabetes increases the risk for obesity, glucose intolerance, and Type 2 diabetes mellitus in the adult life of the offspring. Mechanisms for these effects on the offspring are not well understood, and little information is available to reveal the mechanisms. We studied the effect of maternal diabetes on -cell function in the offspring of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat mothers (STZ-offspring). STZ-offspring did not become glucose intolerant up to 15 wk of age. At this age, however, insulin secretion was significantly impaired, as measured by in vivo and in vitro studies. Consistent with these changes, islet glucose metabolism and some important glucose metabolic enzyme activities were reduced. No significant changes were found in islet morphological analysis. These data indicate that -cell function is impaired in adult STZ-offspring; these changes may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adulthood.

Gestational diabetes leads to down-regulation of CDK4-pRB-E2F1 pathway genes in pancreatic islets of rat offspring

Objective(s): The link between a hyperglycemic intrauterine environment and the development of diabetes later in life has been observed in offspring exposed to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), but the underlying mechanisms for this phenomenon are still not clear. Reduced β-cells mass is a determinant in the development of diabetes (type 1 and type 2 diabetes). Some recent studies have provi...

The Effect of Hydroalcoholic Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) on Memory Retention Deficit in Young Offspring Rat Induced by Maternal Sleep Deprivation

Background:  Maternal sleep deprivation is known to reduce neurogenesis in the hippocampus during pregnancy. Also, it damages and impairs cognitive functions such as learning and memory in the neonates.  Objectives: Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) extract can play an important role in the treatment of cognitive impairments by inhibiting oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the r...

Exposure to Maternal Diabetes Induces Salt-Sensitive Hypertension and Impairs Renal Function in Adult Rat Offspring

OBJECTIVE Epidemiological and experimental studies have led to the hypothesis of fetal origin of adult diseases, suggesting that some adult diseases might be determined before birth by altered fetal development. We have previously demonstrated in the rat that in utero exposure to maternal diabetes impairs renal development leading to a reduction in nephron number. Little is known on the long-te...

Stereological Study on the Effects of Maternal Caffeine Consumption on Histomorphometric Changes of Testis and Prostate in Rat Offspring

Background and Objective: It is conceivable that caffeine consumption would induce gonadal changes. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of embryonic caffeine exposure on rat testis and prostate. Materials and Methods: Female rats were divided into (n=7): A control, only received drinking water. B and C groups received caffeine low dose (26 mg/kg) and high dose (45 mg/kg) respectively...

Morphological changes in the brachial enlargement of the spinal cord in offspring of diabetic rat

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of maternal diabetes on fetal spinal structure, especiallyin brachial enlargement. Sixteen adult female rats were divided into two groups. Diabetes was induced in one group by alloxan agent. Both groups became pregnant by natural matting. On days 7, 14, 21 and 28 after birth, the brachial enlargement of the spinal cord was collected from offsprin...
